Scenic Ride through Arkansas & Oklahoma

The Heavener Runestone

The Public Guardians is a non-profit group of Police, Fire, EMS, Veterans, Military and Medical professionals that raise donations for several public charities.

One of the poker run stops is at the Heavener Runestone Park. Heavener Runestone Park is a 55-acre park located near Heavener, OK. The park is operated by a non-profit organization and the Viking Festival is held at the park on two weekends a year serves as a fundraiser for operating and maintaining the park.

Opened in 1970, the park was established around the Heavener Runestone found in 1923, and most likely inscribed in the 19th century, perhaps by a Swedish immigrant. The stone is located on Poteau Mountain and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in southeastern Oklahoma. It is also, perhaps, one of the most controversial. The controversy centers on when the runes were carved into the piece of Savanna sandstone as well as on their translation. For more details about the runestone and the park, click here.
