The Heavener Runestone

The Public Guardians is a non-profit group of Police, Fire, EMS, Veterans, Military and Medical professionals that raise donations for several public charities.

One of the poker run stops is at the Heavener Runestone Park. Heavener Runestone Park is a 55-acre park located near Heavener, OK. The park is operated by a non-profit organization and the Viking Festival is held at the park on two weekends a year serves as a fundraiser for operating and maintaining the park.

Opened in 1970, the park was established around the Heavener Runestone found in 1923, and most likely inscribed in the 19th century, perhaps by a Swedish immigrant. The stone is located on Poteau Mountain and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in southeastern Oklahoma. It is also, perhaps, one of the most controversial. The controversy centers on when the runes were carved into the piece of Savanna sandstone as well as on their translation. For more details about the runestone and the park, click here.

2016 Steel Horse Rally economic impact: $8.3 Million

10 a.m. Saturday morning, May 4th, 2024

Garrison Ave. & 12th Street, downtown Fort Smith

On Saturday, May 4th, 2024 at 10 a.m. one of the most popular additions to the Steel Horse Rally returns: The Cops & Cones Motorcycle Exhibition. The event takes place in the middle of Garrison Avenue (between the intersection with Towson Ave. west to 11th St.) as law enforcement officers on their motorcycles take on the challenging course. The Steel Horse Rally welcomed officers from Fort Smith, Van Buren, Little Rock, Fayetteville, Bella Vista, Benton County, and Saline County who showcased their riding skills in the 2023 Cops & Cones Motorcycle Exhibition.

This fun, family-friendly event always draws a huge crowd as law enforcement officers are timed as they maneuver through dozens of cones. Thanks to incredible sponsors, the event is free to the public. A special thanks to the Fort Smith Police Department for making this event possible.
