The Law Enforcement Fun Run made its debut in the 2017 Steel Horse Rally as it roared through downtown Fort Smith.

“We wanted to do something that would give people a chance to interact with law enforcement officers in a different environment, as everyday people and fellow riders,” said Maj. Dean Pitts of the Fort Smith Police Department, an organizer of the event.

The run went along the Thunder Loop, a route that takes riders along part of the Pig Trail up to Ozark and back down, before ending on Garrison Avenue on a particularly gorgeous Saturday morning. While the run is primarily about fun, giving riders a chance for fellowship and sightseeing along some of Arkansas’ most scenic trails, it was also about a good cause.

“The funds collected from the registration fee will be split evenly between the Steel Horse Rally Association and the Fort Smith Fraternal Order of Police,” said Pitts.

The Fort Smith Fraternal Order of Police acts as an intermediary between the city and the police, providing a voice for local law enforcement within the city government. They also help families of local law enforcement and support local charities.

“They look out for the rights of officers, and weigh in on political issues that affect the police department,” Pitts added.
